This is not a drawing or painting but rather scratchboard. The scratchboard panel is a 1/8" thick board coated with a special white clay and a topcoat of black India ink. Using any sharp instrument, I scratch off the ink in various patterns to reveal the white clay and form an image. It is one of the most difficult art mediums because it is unforgiving if one makes a mistake. You can't erase or paint over an error. I used a #10 and #11 scalpel to scratch this piece.
Mick Mars is the legendary guitarist for the heavy metal band Motley Crue. He recently retired from the band due to a lifelong illness. I love Mick Mars and really enjoyed doing this piece. His hat with skulls affixed to the band is typical "Mick-style." He often keeps his head slightly downward, which I believe is due to his Ankylosing Spondylitis condition. I'm so glad I got to see Mick play with Crue a few years ago on their stadium tour. Right now, this piece is hanging in my guitar room above a long rack of numerous guitars. I'd love to see this go into the home of a Motley Crue fan.
