Artist Statement

Freedom of expression, to create and develop an idea, without the a priori limitation of the prejudice of criticism, the media and society. Then, let that criticism flow naturally, opining on the work created. To get rid of the burden of the politically and aesthetically correct, as the Impressionists and Surrealists did in their time. Art is no stranger to that. Creating and painting is part of my being and my freedom to express what I feel and think. Then I paint with Freedom and criticize with my truth. The artist must be free from prejudices and politically correct ties. In the same way the body and the soul are seeking for love, plain and naked, at the end love is all that we need. The way to get love/loved, it could be a game that we all play in a different way.

Biography

Born in Habana, Cuba in 1967, Edel Alvarez Galban has always had a fascination with everything artistic. From his infancy he painted everything around him, becoming a threat to all the walls, furniture and electrical devices in his childhood home, no one wanted the child to visit their home for fear he would start "decorating". Elementary teachers noticed very early his interest and artistic talent, but later in adolescent his vocation for medicine tilted the balance to study medicine until he became a doctor.
He practiced sculpture in the school of art Federico Engel en la Habana, Cuba in 1993. In 1995 he came to the United States where he passed the US medical boards and became certified as a Physician. His current medium in his artwork has been painting and this work has been shown in several cities throughout the United States, Central America and the Caribbean.
The vast part of his work is the result of multimedia including, charcoal, acrylic, oil and ink on canvas and paper. He has produced several series of artwork: Personas, Lucias, El bufon Caracol Erotico , Cancionero, El Monte, Los Feos y Desojando Margaritas, Locuras, Watching the Wheels, Dreaming with Mermaids, Peces de Ciudad, Le Fleurs du Mal, Bicycling in Four Seasons and Club 27.
He lives in Saint Petersburg, FL with his wife and two beautiful children. He practices medicine full time at Casa Clinic.
