Jo-An Frances

Artist Statement

For the past thirty-eight years, Jo-An Frances has been studying with such renowned Oriental Brush painters as Master Diana Kan. Frances has also studied with Master Zhuo HeJun, Master Wenda Gu, Henry Wo Yue-Kee, Ning Yeh, Ph.D and recently with Mayee Futterman.

Jo-An , President of TESA, The Exhibiting Society of Artists, was president of the Massachusetts Sumi-e chapter and is current a member of The Sumi-e Society of America and the Sarasota, FL chapter, was a member of the South Shore Art Center and Hull Arts. She was a gallery artist at Hull Arts Gallery and was the 1993 President and Treasurer of Hull Arts and Co¬president of the Hull Cultural Alliance.

Frances' paintings have been exhibited at the Stirling Gallery, Dunedin, Fl; Five Deuces Galleria, Gatx Gallery, and Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL; MA Norwell Science Center, Hull Federal Credit Union Bank, Hull Arts Gallery; The Quincy Arts Festival, and in U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds' Quincy, MA office, In 1993 and 1994 Frances demonstrated for the Damon School in Hull, was an "Artist in Action" at the Pembroke Arts Festival and was a demonstrator at the 1992 South Shore Art Center Art Festival and demonstrates at the St. Petersburg annual Awakening Festival. Biography

For me, my art career started in Boston in College, after learning I was gifted with artistic knowledge but short on the practice of painting, my passion for art percolated and resumed when a noted artist visited me in Panama on the San Blas Islands (the island that I managed as a resort was, in reality a CIA front). I then took a hiatus from pursuing an art career when I entered the Hospitality industry in Puerto Rico, I then proceeded to reclaim my desire to paint when I went to Japan and China in 1985. Practicing and learning the nuances of Chinese Brush painting then came to reality in Cohasset and Hull, Massachusetts at the local art centers. My ultimate art journey has landed me here in St. Petersburg, Florida where I teach workshops and painting classes for all levels of aspiring, working and beginning artists.
