At the edge of my childhood's waters, Cattails thrived.
Tall, together, tangled, these Cattails swayed and showed my mesmerized eyes the invisible- deciphering the winds' indecisive directions.
I wanted to capture that sense of togetherness by making all of the botanical ladies' hands meet and hold each other as they caught the wind.
Not only are they a pleasure of sight, Cattails are a nest for marsh wrens and ducklings. They are a food pantry for many animals and are known as "Cossack Asparagus" as well. Catch the Cattails at the right time, and you can pluck them for a canoe trip snack! (Look it up!)
I found an old photo with ladies twisting around each other in a dance and sketched it in various ways until it flowed. Then, I gave the ladies long leaves and tall shoots until it was ready for color. The deep sunset hues felt like the only way to properly capture the spotlight of their movement, so after playing with a bunch of ways do draw them in the water, I took away their ground and bound them by no gravity- a way I prefer to capture things anyways.
