Information

RISE was inspired by my uncanny connection with a place and culture that I have not visited in my present life, Africa. This connection became evident in my 20's around the same time I began painting. I immersed myself in studying the indigenous peoples, music, dance and art from there which influence my life and art today. Inner struggles and life events produced RISE as a surreal self portrait freeing the artist of, which I believe was from a past life, keeping her life flame alive while healing. A tribute to women who have survived abuse and obstacles in life, rising above personal and social issues.

Symbolism is evident in this pece with the use of staples, mirror and glass. Organic materials ground the viewer and create a liason between this world and others connecting us to ancient ancestral times.
