Around the time of the pandemic I began drawing the shapes found on this planter in sketchbooks as a way to relax and bring some joy to my day in a time of uncertainty. I continued to fill the pages of my sketchbooks with these simple shape drawings and grew curious about what they would look like on a ceramic surface. On this wheel thrown form, I applied pigmented slips and then carved the shapes into the planter. I carved out the negative space in between the shapes to save the majority of the surface I had applied. This created an unexpected, vine-like appearance to the pot that reminded me of time I spent climbing trees throughout my childhood. This planter captures the sense of wonder from outdoor play in my youth combined with the utilitarian purpose of growing something new in the present.
