During the pandemic, I had the urge to color, but did not want the image that I was coloring to be specific. I recalled a time from my childhood when my sister would draw these continuous scribble designs and then color them in for something to do when she was bored. With this concept in mind, I adapted it to individual shapes that would fit together nicely on a page and was elated with the outcome. I continued to create these shape drawings within the confines of my sketchbooks as a relaxing activity to do in my downtime. I became curious with the idea of applying these two dimensional patterns onto the surfaces of my ceramic forms. For this cup, I started with a piece of newspaper where I drew and cut out each shape. I applied the newspaper shapes at random to a leather hard clay surface with the help of a little water. Then I brushed a layer of pigmented slip over the shapes. Once it had dried, I removed the newspaper to reveal the clay body underneath. I then carved additional lines and inlayed them with bright colored underglazes to lean into the cup's playful nature.
