Information

In 1950, Penfield and Rasmussen published the first image of the motor homunculus, or representation of a physical modality on the surface of the cerebral cortex. Subsequently, it was determined that multiple homunculi exist for both the motor and sensory systems. Although the anatomy is easily visible using MRI, the homunculi are buried within the brain's electrical circuitry. Like separate beings, each homunculus views the world through its programmed modality and determines it own interpretation of "self".
